Lifeguarding
Steps of Employment
- MUST be 16 years of age by May 1st to work for the City of Georgetown
- Fill out an application and return it to HR or Aquatics Coordinator
- Obtain the required certifications – American Red Cross Lifeguarding (CPR/AED must be renewed every year)- can get new certification through parks and recreation classes in spring .
- Interview
- Drug screen within 48 hrs of the time of approval for job. Clear background check.
- Attend all aquatic staff orientations. Complete hiring packet.
Lifeguarding Classes 2010
Interested in becoming a lifeguard or simply want to hone up on your skills? Register for Lifeguarding Classes offered by the City of Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department.
Description: Ages 15 years and up. The foundation of the ARC Lifeguarding program is to teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries. This class will focus on understanding the value of behaving in a professional manner, learning how to identify behaviors of a swimmer, distressed swimmer and an active or passive drowning victim, understanding the components of an emergency action plan and how to activate it, understanding the general procedures for an emergency occurring in water or on land, demonstrating how to perform equipment-based rescues, learning how to provide first aid and how to care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, and learning how to recognize and care for possible head, neck, and back injuries.

Water Safety Instructor
Ages 16 years and up. The foundation of the ARC Water Safety Instructor program is to train instructor candidates to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels and Preschool Aquatics, and two levels or Parent and Child Aquatics. This class will focus on expanding on information from the ARC Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) course, identifying key elements and strategies for planning and preparing effective and safe swim lessons, identifying key class management principles, elements and strategies for planning, preparing, and conducting safe swim lessons, describing the importance of effective observation for teaching and how to develop it, observing swimming, headfirst entry and diving skills and accurately classifying them and suggesting appropriate interventions to improve them, developing the ability to effectively communicate about participant’s progress in swim lessons, modifying teaching to meet unexpected challenges including participants who misbehave, demonstrating the ability to accommodate participants with disabilities and other health conditions.
